A New Brain

October 21, BiGALA member William Finn '74 joined Boston area members of BiGALA for a cocktail reception followed by a production of his recent musical, A New Brain, at the Boston Center for the Arts in the beautiful (and very gay) South End.

A New Brain is the semi-autobiographical story of Finn's battle with brain cancer several years ago. As he explained in an interview at the time of the musical's first production, "One week after winning some Tony Awards in 1992 for Falsettos, my first Broadway show, I ended up in the hospital with what one doctor mistakenly told me was an inoperable brain tumor. All I could think about, while sitting there waiting for the final diagnosis, were the songs I had planned to write but hadn't finally written." And lucky we are that he lived to write those songs! Fifteen BiGALA members joined Finn at a local apartment for a cocktail party before going over to the theater. The event actually garnered some - unexpected - notice in the local society columns of both the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald. Such a great time was had by all, that BiGALA members are planning another event for early December. See the notes section for more photographs from the night.
