Profiles of 1997 Interns by Sara Ferris '84 BiGALA awarded $2,500 stipends to two current Williams students - sophomore Jacqueline Vimo of Wellesley, Massachusetts, and senior John Corso of Irvington, New York. The stipends will support summer 1997 internship projects. John Corso John, a studio art major, plans to create queer story lines for familiar television shows to explore the relation between media image and political opinion regarding queerness. He digitizes found television footage, recuts the visual components into a new queer narrative, and lays in a new audio track. For example, one of his past pieces gave the two male protagonists in the cartoon Johnny Quest gay identities. Jacqueline Vimo Jacqueline Vimo, a political science major, will examine perceptions of HIV/AIDS in the San Francisco queer youth community. She will be interning both as a peer health educator for the LYRIC (Lavender Youth and Recreation Center) HIV prevention program and at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. She intends to interview a broad range of young people from different races, classes, and genders to assess how their perceptions of HIV/AIDS and understandings of queer identity inform one another. |
